Sorry rlm and Doug. Didn't catch your last post a year back. You guys are probably right. I'm just hung up on the history of the set and the holder I found it in. In 1952 B. Max Mehl was offering $5 for this coin in new condition. That made me think it would not have been worth the time to add the mint mark or the VDB. With still an open mind I'm wondering when scotch tape, (as many call it today) came out. Maybe someone played with the set a bit in later years than I figured on.
If it's an added mintmark they added it to a circulated Matte proof. That is not the reverse of a business strike 1909 VDB
Just got the news. Genuine 98 Damaged or Tooled. Figured as much. The hits on the reverse killed it. It only cost me $33 to get it in a holder. I'm happy. At least now it can be sold some day with less question about what it is. I'll post some of the other coins from the same submission the next few days.
oh coool! I was going to the MM was suspicious. I had a coin recently submitted that I was worried about that came back F-12... gennie is good but what are they saying is tooled? Don' t you hate that?
I wish they would narrow it down a bit. Code 98 covers about 8 or 10 different problems. I'm guessing the hits on the reverse or the area about 2 0clock on the reverse. Looks like someone was picking at the dirt next to the rim.
