1909-O Barber Half.

  1. That is actually a Fine coin. The rim ding is worse at 3, but the rim ding at 1 on the reverse is a painful reminder as well. When those rim dings affect the denticles, it's all over.

Alot of people seem to be saying that. But the coin is listed for anywhere from 18-24 in different price guides I've seen. I know you can't go by price guides. But is this really only a melt value coin? And melt is over $11 by the way. So, are these price ranges what you can expect from a dealer, or retail? They must be wholesale, because I know both of the dealers around here would give me at least melt for this coin.

    Agreed!

Still, all letters in Liberty are clear, and some of the ribbon below. PCGS must have graded this after a liquid lunch.

^Agreed. When he said that coin was only graded VG8, and then I looked at the pic, I was pretty suprised.

  6. It was probably net graded with that major rim bump. That's my guess. I'm surprised it got into a holder.

Oh, I see now. Yeah, the one at 1 o'clock on the reverse is pretty bad.

I am really shocked with some of the lowball values being given by some others here. This is worth at least 15 dollars. Somewhere closer to 20 wouldn't be out of line either.

I put a set together just like th OPs coin... Now I want to upgrade it already!! Funny thing is I like "look" of a VG-F Barber halve more than higher grades.. weird eh?

Understand there are two sets of values you're seeing here... what a dealer would pay, and what he would sell for. Of course, there are eBay prices, which always seem to be slightly higher than retail.

I understand that $15-$20 is the retail value of this coin, but that is what it's worth at the end of the day.

Sure, dealers will obviously pay less because they are in coins for a profit. But I also know I could go to several local dealers today and they would gladly buy decent problem free Barber Halves like this at full melt value all day long (currently about 23x face value or $11.50 per half dollar). Of course, they'd pay a little less for typical Barber junk that is very worn down and underweight, but not much less. Dealers around here are paying around 20-22x face for standard junk silver of any kind, even boring worn out Franklins. Bottom line is that any dealer offering less than $10 for this coin would be a dealer that would never have any of my business.

I agree. I know how my local dealer operates, and he would give me melt for it, maybe slightly more. Then he would probably try to double his money on it, lol.
