WOW! The three quoted above are my favorites. That Barber Half is just sick. I don't think most people understand how hard it is to find attractively toned gem Barber coinage.
Amazing set. You certainly don't need me to tell you that. Wow! Please sell me this coin when you are done with it:
The 1909-D Barber Quarter in PCGS MS66 used to be in the Dale Friend Barber Quarter Collection awhile back, which was one of the top Barber Quarter sets ever put together for those who don't already know. Not sure who ended up getting it at the sale of Dale's collection, but I presume it bounced between a few dealers/collectors (undoubtedly increasing the price along the way) and someone also sent it to CAC for a sticker. The coin ultimately made it's way into Joe Kaminski's (Kaminski Coin) inventory which is where I found it in early 2009. It's currently listed at $2600 in the PCGS Price Guide, $3500 for a 66+. Going from memory, I think I paid around $3300 for it which I thought was high at the time, but I went for it as I didn't think I'd find a better looking example of the date w/o having to pay MS67 money. Today, I'm very happy I got this one as it's one of my favorites in the set.
Illioni420, thanks for the story. That's interesting to know the history of a coin like that. The stuff I get is much less expensive and does not have that paper trail. By the way I will show your response to my wife and she may not give me some of the grief she does about my coin budget. Congrats on your collection.
Mike - Mike - Mike - what a sweet set of coins - love the new images too !! My 1898 set could give you a run for the money - but your 1909 set tops it !! If you ever want to sell those Barbers ..... ;-)
That's a awesome coin. Thanks for the background. I do remember the Friend coins -- many of them were stunners. Again, if you ever liquidate, I'd love a shot at that coin.
I would like to point out that this is what happens when you buy coins with eye appeal. We have two members publicly salivating over these coins and most certainly there are others salivating in private. My guess is that Illini paid premiums for most of the coins in his collection, but I would be willing to bet that if and when he sells, he will come out ahead. There is no substitute for eye appeal. So for all of you collectors out there who are proud of your conquests where you acquired a coin back of bid, take note, paying strong money for great coins is often the better deal. Gotta go now, have to clean some drool off my desk.
I love the blast red ms-66 1909 indian cent , and all of these coins....just 09-s Indy looks odd to me.
Without looking values up....I think we might be talking 6 figures here total, I'm not looking it up, might even be way low ! Probably am way low at just 6 figures ( without looking) probally more like 250K , without looking stuff up....guessing, but could come a lot closer. The only coin I don't like is the 09's Indian cent !
