What is a "SMALL ZERO" 1909 Lincoln cent? I assume it is a die variety and perhaps some people seek them. And what can they be worth?
Compare the "0" with the photos on coppercoins.com or other comparison with another 1909. The zero in 1909 was about the size of the upper loop in the "9". Artistic reasons. Jim
The 1909-S Lincoln wheat penny is highly saught after because the VDB, the designers initials Victor D. Brenner, appear on the reverse instead of the obverse. It has a higher value because the rarety, only 484,000 struck at San Fransisco, compared to 27,995,000 at Philadelphia. Values can range from $650 for Good grade, to $2000 for MS-63 grade. This is what the small date looks like:
I am totally confused. So far as I am aware, there is just one size date/0 with or without the VDB and with or without the "S"
You can get the 1909 and 1909-S with and without the VDB on the reverse. The ones with the VDB are worth more. In MS60, there are in order from least to most ... 1909 $17.00 1909 VDB $22.00 1909-S $325.00 1909-S VDB $1700.00 AFAIK they all have the same shape 0 PS the initials VDB only moved to the obverse in 1918, on the base of the bust.
Somebody likes them, whatever they are. Somebody likes them, whatever they are. Having been chided for moving one on feeBay the new owner declared I'ld given a bad discription (I called it Road Kill) but they were happy because is was a "No VDB~but Small Zero". So I at least kept my 100% satisfaction rate. Dang~look at the photo! I see a VDB and now I wonder what a "Small Zero" means. But the anwser seems to be About $2.00 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330429798645&ssPageName=STRK:MESOX:IT
http://www.empirecoins.net/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=40042 Try again... Trying to compare the zero's on the 09-S VDB'shttp://www.empirecoins.net/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=39479
Could be the woodgrain throwing my vision off, but I thought it looked smaller. I've never heard of it though...
i think it looks smaller because the condition of the coin. if you look closely on the first one you could see the bottom of the 0 is worn down.
As far as I know there is no "small zero" or "large zero" varieties on the 1909 Lincoln cents. The only "zero" that looks a little different on the 1909 Lincolns is the slightly doubled zero on the 1909 VDB Doubled Die Obverse FS-1101. PCGS MS64RB another PCGS MS64RB ANACS MS62BN
Feeling better Feeling better about never having heard of a "Small Zero" 09 now. Thanks for the answers all.
