Found this at an antique store recently. Was surprised to see the MM on the reverse after asking to look at it. A few small laminations on the obv. What’s with the coloring?
Nice coin, the coloring is due to Improperly Mix Alloy. AKA Woody due to some that have a wood-grain texture. Your coin also has a few small Lamination errors. One at "I" of America and one at bottom of the Liberty Band. http://www.error-ref.com/improper-alloy-mix/ http://www.error-ref.com/lamination-loss-after-strike/
Cool. I am not really experienced with the IHCs. Seen LWC woodies from time to time, but those did not have the level of color contrast of this IHC.
I can get a better pic of the date when i get home. I had not noticed it, but it could just be contrasting colors. I see a similar but less apparent shadow on the inside of the 0.
Here’s a couple close-ups of the date. Best I can do. Looks like there could be some type of doubling on the 0 and maybe the 8...Regardless, I think I got it for a pretty good price.
