I have a 1908 Gold Half Eagle $5 coin. Looks to be in uncirculated condition, but has a rim ding directly above the point on the crown.

What does the damage do to the value?

Sorry my photo skills need some work...

I would grade your gold piece as au details damaged, likely cleaned also. I don't think it is uncirculated, but even if it was, most collectors would pass on it because of the damage to the rim. I would think in a shop, retail would be melt plus a few bucks. 1908 is a common date - slabbed MS 62 coins sell for around $500.
