    New to me also but I found this
    The test cut was a readily easy method to expose the "innards" of the coin and reveal what was beneath the coin's surface. Some would scratch the coin's surface while some would cut a large gash as we often see in ancient silver coins
    So I think someone wanted to make sure the coin was silver, similar to chop marks on Trade Dollars

    Here's the start, I'll post more after breakfast.
    Note I didn't use the 1959 Lincoln it looked out of place, so I dug into my change bucket and dug out a 1960 D & the 1908 IHC was purchased raw from RCNH. TPG 1.jpg
