18X4 holed Large Cent

Based on a coin facts photo analysis I see this being an 1824 as opposed to an 1834 based on the 1's placement in relation to the base of the bust and the proximity to the first star. What Say Ye?

Do you ever wonder why this was holed, especially where it was holed. I would think if someone were doing this for hanging on a necklace it would be done to show the obverse. But I've also heard this was done in order to string many coins on a leather string to carry so as not to lose. There's always some unknown and long lost history behind these that will just never be available.

 

Clearly an 1824, the stars line up to the bust perfectly the same as the 1824.

 

Yes Totally...as I was figuring out the date that's exactly what was going through my mind. I've not heard that about the leather string...it makes sense, but why drill through the date?

 

Too bad Leonard Nimoy is not still doing his TV series, we might have found out. Rest in Peace Spock.
