I am fairly certain this is a genuine Morgan with an altered date. The discoloration at the date is barely seen in hand. The date just looks funky to me. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thank you.

I went out and compared the dates to certified coins on the web and danged if they aren't a fairly good match to my aged eyes. Sure does seem odd that the only place on the obverse of that coin that appears discolored is around the date.

My thoughts are that the whole coin is fake. There isn't any relief to the devices.

That was my first take too. Only thing that swayed me was the toning on the eagles chest. I have lots of Morgans with similar toning but don't know if I have seen the counterfeiters create that kind of toning.

It's definitely not good. The "5" is not even close to what a real one would be. Run away from this one.

The 5 is the first thing I noticed as well. The only thing I can say for certain about this coin is it weighs 26.7 grams and is made of silver.

Date digits are wrong, and the luster looks funny to me.

Yup a grafted 5 on the date ,and I bet one of the better vamers can nail the correct date before the surgery.

The coin is an authentic Morgan Dollar but it did not leave the mint as an 1895. It probably started out as 1890 or 1891 both of which have far date placements, 1895 did not.

Looks like an authentic, altered coin. Probably 1890-S.

Definitely altered date. The 5 on this coin doesn't resemble the real 5 on an 1895-S Morgan.

How about that halo around the not so angelic 5.

That 5 is definitely not a mint numeral....

Agree with other CT ers , the 5 does not look like a U.S. Mint 5 but is very close compared to a real 1895' Morgan . This coin would fool a lot of collectors at first look so be carefull.
