Long time since I have posted but I follow the posts every day! Recently I purchased this nice 1892 gold 1/2 sovereign on eBay for a reasonable price. It looked like the seller was an antique dealer not a regular coin seller. It was in some old packaging maybe purchased many years ago in a souvenir shop in the UK. When I received it in the mail I was surprised what a nice piece it was so I sent it to PCGS for grading; it came back as a MS62! Details included that there was only 1 population at this grade and only 1 higher. Also was a high shield version where according to an online resource showed that year only 5% were of the high shield variety! I don’t plan on selling this but it seems like I have a rare coin here and cannot find any comparable to determine for insurance value; maybe I’m just dreaming? Would love your opinions as to what I’ve got here!
Nice coin! What is the difference between the "High Shield" and a normal or regular shield? Do you have a photo of the other by any chance?
Nice coin! Victoria led an interesting life, not sure if you're familiar with her story, but it's worth a read.
Nice coin and awesome grade. I did an image search on Bing search engine and found that there is a high shield variety. Link: https://www.sovr.co.uk/victoria-189...don-dish-l514-no-jeb-high-shield-di09768.html Compare this picture with yours.
You might find it here to compare your coin to...Link : https://www.coinarchives.com/w/results.php?search=1/2+sovereign+1892&s=0&upcoming=0&results=100
Here is Numista claiming there is a high and low shield variety Link: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces13218.html But not show the difference between the 2.
This pic was taken from this coin off Ebay link: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1892-Que...=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 of which shows the high shield variety.
The difference is how far or near the shield is to the BRI in BRITAIN. Your coin looks very close to BRI meaning you have a low shield variety. Your coin PCGS label might be wrong/incorrect.
You can see here the difference in the distance away from BRI in Britain your coin: low shield Their coin: high shield
Not sure what your coins value is ? Calling all Great Britain coin collectors. Calling @PaddyB he might know the current value of your coin.
You talked me into it. I think the market graders attributed it wrong. And his is under a gold Secure Plus shield (their highest tier submission).
Graders do make mistakes. I would have it resubmitted with the correct attribution, but that's just me. I am a stickler when it comes to getting it right/correct.
