Why do you let him bother you so much? The claims that he makes that all of those other dealers who ignore the grades given by the TPG's are complete bunk, they don't. He mentioned that Tom Bush usually grades coins 2 grades lower than the TPG's. I have been interacting with TomB on this forum, NGC, and the PCGS forum for over 5 years and I can tell you that is not true. While Tom may be a little more conservative than the TPGs, nobody employs grading standards as punitive as Doug. His opinions on grading are so radical that he is tantamount to the lunatic fringe on the subject. You know how to grade Morgan Dollars. You understand how the TPGs grade Morgan Dollars. I see no need for you to chase Doug's seal of approval on your grading skills. I got news for you, I expect Doug to grade almost every coin 1-2 grades below the TPG. And it has nothing to do with gradeflation or the perceived change in grading standards. I have shown many NGC graded coins in old fatty slabs over the years that he has undergraded as well. As for the coin in question in the OP, there was only one person who thought the coin wouldn't grade because of a severe bagmark, and he was wrong!
I think it will grab a 62...Id love to give it more but it has some distracting marks on the cheek. Nice looking lady tho! Looks like you have a couple clashes...I LUUUUUUV those clashers!!
Well..i was wrong...i went for a 62. OHHHH WELLLLLL HAHA. Nice coin tho!!!! Im glad that it grabbed a 63 and not a 62 like i thought. More $ for ya!! Obviously didnt get thru the entire thread before I posted what I thought it would bring...
I'd said 61-62 cause op the mark on the cheek but as the op said his lighting enhanced the marks more so than in hand I may have felt a bit stronger in hand as the tpg did glad it got the 63 and sold
Doug never gave the coin a grade. He called it UNC details because of the nasty looking hit. I'm sure others here thought that was possible as well.
Doesn't matter Larry. The only ones who can ever know what they are talking about are those who agree with the TPGs. Disagree with them and you're either crazy or don't know anything. Didn't you know that ?
Never said that--you obviously know about coins. In terms of grading, you're overly severe. End of story, as I am not going to make this personal--the thread was on grading a Morgan Dollar. Paul is quite right in his response # 81 above--no point in arguing over seeing things differently, and I stand by my grading skills, particularly in the Morgan series, since I have been collecting it most of my life. So, not arguing the skill of TPGs versus any member any more, as it is unproductive--we are not Russia, so we are all free to believe whatever we wish.
Really, now you're going to play the victim card? Yes, Doug, all of us dozens of people with centuries of combined years of collecting experience, some of us in very specific and niche areas (e.g., Morgans, Jeff Nickels, etc) are all conspiring against you to promote TPG grade inflation. Of course, looking in the mirror would never offer you any insight as to where the issue might lie. Sigh.
So Matt, if you submitted this coin 100 times to PCGS, how many times do you think it would be returned in a GENUINE holder for damage?
And Paul, I really don't think there is anybody who isn't well aware that I disagree with the grading standards used by the TPGs or that I grade coins differently than they do. But why is that a problem for you ?
It doesn't bother me a bit. But this thread asked what you think PCGS will grade it. I guess I just liked it better when you used to give your grade followed by what you thought the TPG would grade it. Your answer in this thread made it look like you thought PCGS would bag the coin for damage which you & I both know was never going to happen.
I know this is an old thread but I just read it today so I'm gonna guess then go back and see if the results are in. I'm no expert and only collect circulated inexpensive Morgans and Peace dollars so I don't even have an example this nice. With that being said I would give it UNC details myself I can't get past that cheek, but I would guess TPG would go MS63. It's a beautiful coin if you can get past that cheek hope I didn't make anybody mad saying details and I hope it didn't come back that way. -Kent
No issue from me with you saying details. I can see where some might say that, but I think in hand you might change your mind. I don't have a problem with the grade on this one based off the pictures - but in hand I might have a different opinion.
Then if it doesn't bother you, why do you go on and on about it all the time ? Well, I don't make posts based on what I think somebody else likes or dislikes. I post what I want to say, not what somebody else wants to hear. Did it ? rlm commented shortly after I posted - To which I responded - I'd have to say that makes my meaning, my opinion, pretty dang clear. Read what I actually say Paul and don't try and interpret it as meaning something else. I pretty much say exactly what I mean in clear, plain language. Very, very, rarely is there ever any room for ambiguity in my comments. But I suppose you'll want to dispute that too.
If you are going to drag me into this, then you need to go to the beginning. My post was in response to; I am sorry, but that very much sounds to me like "Your answer in this thread made it look like you thought PCGS would bag the coin for damage ......"
I agree with you...but then he also said this a few posts later: I find myself torn with this particular coin. While I agreed that with today's current standards it would grade (and I said MS63)...I personally wouldn't buy the coin because of that hit.
