The first coin is AU details, cleaned. I see hairlines, and pitting, indicating abrasion. It is a shame, as the OP coin has nice detail, but has that dead luster look of a cleaned coin. It is definitely NOT MS. The quarter is also AU details cleaned. Same reason—abrasion from buffing or polishing. It has more luster than the dime, but like so many Barber coins, it was definitely cleaned. In the day of Barber coinage, cleaning was very common. People who think either of these coins better learn to spot coins that have been cleaned. Neither of these two are even close to MS. Had they not been cleaned, they would have graded AU 53 or so. Newbies to the Barber series—please learn to recognize a cleaned coin.
This is exactly what turned me off to the Barber dimes. I love the overall look of the dime but the more I obtained, the more I learned the surfaces were not original, had clean lines, etc. Then it was a matter of discouragement and ignorance. I was not (still not) quite sure how to tell the clean coin, so why risk the expense? Also, I did not want to buy a low graded, sure fire original surface Barber because then it took away from the beauty of the original design. I will return to the series in the near future after some further education on cleaned coins and once my current obsessions are concluded.
