Too baggy on the cheek and in the field in front of the face. And there's what appears to be some rim hits just below the eye. With luck I'd say MS-62.
I'm going 63 on this one, but might go a 64 because of the lower standards... That being said i'd be suprised if it goes lower than 62 or higher than 65. NICE COIN none the less!
While I know there are those who make that claim I don't believe it for a second. In my opinion the reason is the same as it is for coins with a famous pedigree, of a high value, of a certain rarity, or those with attractive toning. And let's not forget, there were millions of other Morgans that were kept in bags just as long as the GSAs were. In fact most of the Morgans that are seen today came from bags that the public never saw until the 1950's & 60's. And there is no special allowance made for them.
Matt, would I get it graded? Eh, Maybe you only live once so do what you feel is going to be the right thing. As for grading, I think it's going to get a MS62/63.
I do assume that we both at least agree they are graded slightly differently then CC dollars not in GSA boxes? I think there are several factors as to why this is. They are from a famous hoard firstly, but this famous hoard was known to have been stored in bags for many years. Hence it is also known that GSA coins tend to be bag marked. The other BU coins which we see frequently are known to have been stored in bags for years but there is really no way to determine which one was and which one wasn't. With a GSA coin you KNOW it was in a bag for some 80+ years (I can make good change for a C note I promise). It is documented.
MS-64 Star, at least. With the GSA dollars, they have never been dipped or cleaned. Only been in bags and put into the holders. Totally original coins. Bag marks don't count. The Lady's cheek is holding this one back.
My guess would be an MS63. I am very curious, as I have a 1885-CC GSA in holder with certifications. I wonder how they grade these coins in holders. Do they remove and replace the coin for an actual examination or view through the protective cover ? How does the coin come back to the owner, still in the original holder or what ? Dave
I'd say 63 based off my limited exposure to morgans, I was not aware of this so-called 'grade bump' for GSA dollars, but even so I think 63 is a solid guess
I'm going to say NGC will give it a 63. Weak breast feathers hold me back from saying 64. If it was PCGS I'd say borderline 62/63.
They leave it in the original holder and grade it. Then they put a band around the original holder with the grade printed on the band.
And 63 it is. NGC just posted the grade this afternoon and she MS63'ed. I'll post pics when I get it back.
