Hi guys, I have this 1889 Indian Head Penny and would like help to confirm that it is in fact a woody. If so, is this unusual for Indian Head pennies? I have not seen this too often. Second question is to ask about the rim. Why is the rim much thicker on the obverse left side and bottom/bottom right than the rest of the penny? It is also of different thickness on the reverse. Thanks very much!
Yes it's a woody, worn some but nice. The IHC were not produced like today's Cents are so it is rarer but not uncommon as the amount of them is equal to the mintage. The rim is a slight MAD, misaligned die strike, also common and the equipment used to mint coins in 1889 is not compare able to today's equipment. It's 131 years old.
