Even in text, attitudes won't get you far. They're trying to help by leading you in the right direction. I think the majority thinks its fake, as the reasons stated. I wouldn't be buying a $6,000+ coin without it being graded. If it was real they'd be asking top dollar, and since it was from Clist, I guessing the seller knew it was fake and now there's no recourse for you but to take a loss.
Heh...well, this is how it goes on forums. Everybody has an opinion. I think it's a good idea to send it to a TPG.
lgl- i'd love to know to I'm trying to figure out what you're asking then Rob. Some here say fake, some say real. Tim- He may waste 30 bucks, but if it is real it could bring big bucks
Do you have a coin dealer near you? Before you spend the money and have it graded...take it to a dealer and let an expert look at it in hand. Coins can be very difficult to examine in photos.
Good advice, its going to cost you a lot more than $30 bucks to send it in and have it looked at by a TPG.
You are right--what do you know? I've owned 4 1889CC dollars and none of them looked in the slightest like that. It is a Chinese Fake. Send it to NGC or PCGS and have a good laugh.
I'm not disclosing that right now. I plan on it It crossed my mind and I listened to what they had to say. After thinking about it I decided to give it a go. Don't think that I don't understand cause I do. What I don't like is that where/how it was bought has any bearing on the coin itself. The fact that it was bought from CL is irrelevant but I know it's in the back off peoples minds and put a damper on the discussion. First off, there's no attitude. Just simply like I said before... Asking for help deciphering that page and apply it to my coin and see what conclusion is reached so that I UNDERSTAND as well. Exactly Do you consider a coin shop coin dealers? Cause if that's the case then the guy I took with me deals with coins on a daily basis... but that doesn't mean he's a expert grader. There's plenty of coin shop around that I can take it to to check.
This is an even better looking fake than the OP coin, and it is an acknowledged poseur in a spurious PCGS slab. C'mon, we get fake 1889Cc and 1893S threads all the time. He thinks he got the bargain of his life, or he's jerking our chain. There are not that many 1889CCs floating around outside of a slab--people know what they have. Like he really bought one of the ultimate keys to the series as a newbie and it is not in plastic? The entire story smells to me--either it is total nonsense, or the coin is fake, and I am beginning to believe that both are the case. If the OP does own the coin, he owns a nice $20 Chinese 1889CC. The very fact that he hasn't disclosed the amount paid is a dead giveaway to the fact that this thread is not a learning experience, but an exercise in garbage.
The thing that sticks out to me is the lack of detail in the cotton. I would expect that if this is a cast, there is little to no detail there. And, that's what I think I see in the pic - no detail.
Do you honestly think that the coin is real, and the story that a "dealer" said it is real smacks of anything but total nonsense? It is as I said, a bad looking fake. There are lots of them out there, and I posted one that looks even better than his alleged coin. However, the coin looks decidedly spurious. Link to fake Morgans--some of them even decently struck:http://www.vamworld.com/COUNTERFEIT+PAGE
Yep! I heard how bad you said teh reverse was . That is why I overlaid the pictures. Well. guess what. They were identical. I have no idea if the coin is real, but I actually looked at it. So far, all you have said is that it is a poor fake (which it obviously is not) and the odds are it is a fake. Well maybe so, but what you have said proves nothing. BTW, here are the overlays. I know it is really hard to see, but that is really his coin over the real coin - 2 different opacities.
Your overlay means nothing. Here is a picture of a FAKE 1889CC, in a fake PCGS slab. Looks better than the OP's coin:
I believe this thread has run its course. I'm not gonna sit around and indirectly be called a liar or that I'm making up stories. I just came here to get a better understanding and to discern the fakes from the real ones. There are some of you that are trying to help and not in a rude manner. For any of you that truly want to help and are genuinely interested in helping me understand send me a message and we can discuss this like civil human beings. Thanks.
Hey, I apologize for the way you were treated here. I tried, but this is not my area. Did you try the link cpm9ball gave you? I would guess that would be more helpful than anything you have seen here.
Two questions for the OP; Do you know the reeding count? For a '89-CC it should be 177 (though VamWorld lists 177 or 178), anything outside of that would be suspect. Also, is that a die crack/break on the E in AMERICA?
Good call Raider34! Rob Oz - Can you post a pic of the coin's edge? If it's cast, that's where the evidence will be. On the other hand, if I ever had a question about a Morgan, Morgandude would be the man I'd turn to.
