1888 three cent nickel

    That might have been true about the 2 cent and early 3 cent pieces, but not the late date 3 cent. By 1874 coins were flowing back into the country in tremendous numbers to such an extent they created a glut in the marketplace. This is why coinage figures declined so much in the 1870's and why the 3 cent and shield nickels went to proof only in 76 and 77.
