Hello I would really appreciate some help with this coin I think it has been cleaned and I would like a hand grading it. I am thinking VF-20 to VF-40 ? Not being the greatest at grading but I sure could use some help with the grading and value Thank you in advance All the best Alan
Hi Alan yes unfortunately it has been cleaned...half dimes as what we called them state side silver 5 cent on your side the border were collected in coin boards and albums that toned them very dark at times. So many were cleaned ,dipped...some very harshly as terminal toning with turn silver black. Vf 20 I just believe it or not...got this Book Sunday its an 1965 copy of grading Canadian coins. And I got it free! And you're the first I have used it for.
Alan your specimen is an obv #3 variety Its value in vf 20 $300 CAD. I hope this helps....my best to Helen tell her Paddy sends a hug! 5 cents 1888 - Obverse # 2 : 40,0005 cents 1888 - Obverse # 3 : n/a Specifications - 5 cents 1888 - Obverse # 2Alloy: 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper Weight: 1.18 grams Diameter : 15.49 mm Engraver: Leonard C. Hey Paddy As always my friend thank you for the help. Glad you got to use you new book I m hoping it is a VF 20. Hellen sends her best as always Best Alan PS This is a very good site for all Canadian coins and paper money is a great site for info. www.coinsandcanada.com
Interestingly, the NGC World Coin Guide/Numista shows a 1873 coin pic that matches the OP’s coin. Perhaps they simplified the die sometime after 1870, but no listings of different dies. Also, $300 CAN= $231 USD.
To bad about the harsh cleaning. https://coinsandcanada.com/coins-prices-newfoundland.php?coin=5-cents-1888&years=5-cents-1865-1896
I found the edge lamination interesting. Just above the RE on the obverse, it appears to be a lamination, but without having the coin in hand, I really can't tell for sure. Excellent photos by the way.
