1887 NGC MS 64 Morgan

I'd rather give a friend in need the $50 rather than pay that kind of money for those kinds of coins. I wouldn't want any of my collector friends thinking I'd actually pay $50 for that one when there are literally thousands of nicer ones to choose from.

I tend to agree with this.

Although I have an uncle whos been in the coin biz for the past 50 years and he swears by Star and some of the other little guys.

Showed me a nice CC morgan dollar the other week.......he tells me this thing will grade at MS 65 or higher! I sort of nod and smile.

The coin was SO obviously cleaned that it was sad.

Well, guess he did it get it graded from Star....now he thinks he can get upward of 100k for it.

I don't know.

I do know I feel safer sending big money coins to more well known TPGers whom have a proven and credible track record......

 

One thing I would like to add late in this thread, is the fact that Philly coins often had a duller luster, especially after the dies had worn out as the die that struck this coin obviously was.

 

OK, here is my take on this coin and the reason I posted it here.

I agree with the grade that NGC has assigned, PCGS gave it the same grade if that makes anyone feel better. The coin in hand is pretty much as it appears in the pictures.

The reason the coin was posted here was for education, I have seen VF to 64 given to the coin. Does it look like a typical vf coin, yes it does to some eyes and I can not argue what those eyes see.

For grins and giggles I took this coin to a show over the weekend, Showed it to several "dealers". It served its purpose for me well. It showed me which dealers can be trusted, which dealers can actually, GET THIS... grade a coin. Some of the older dealers stated they did not disagree with the grade but it wasn't a coin they felt would move very fast. (Honest) Others gave me the boy, NGC blew it big time with this coin offering bullion for it. (I bet it would sit in their showcase for sale and never see a bullion dealer)

Now to clearify. I am not a professional coin dealer, grader or anything like that. I am just your average Joe who happens to collect coins and likes to study them, I have for over 40 years. I have one completed set of Morgans and 5 away from my second set. Also a few thousand extras.

I purchased this coin because of the strike, the colors and the grade assigned to it by a top tpg. Wasnt an expensive purchase and certainly has weeded out the dealers that I will deal with at shows. : ) How many would pay a few bucks to be able to do that?????

The coin in hand is a 64, weakly stuck yes.. toning that is less than appealing yes. are there better examples out there? yes. Beauty is in the eye of the beerholder they say. Have the TPG's overgraded coins? YES. Now being honest, I would not have touched this coin had it not been in a slab. Those that know me know that I am not a slab collector, However, I do own several and have had some slabbed.

This my friends is the David Copperfield coin in my collection, Fools 90% of the people 100% of the time.

We as collectors have become accustomed to the blast white Morgans. This should raise some eyebrows... I would venture to say that 80+% of which have taken the proverbial bath along the way.
