Hello. I recently got my magnifier out and was looking at my Indian Head cents and noticed this 1886 with an apparent doubling of the facial contour. The coin was cleaned by someone and is pretty worn, but I couldn't see this on any of my other Indians. Could it be caused by Die Deterioration or ??? Thanks.

Thanks for the opinion - that was my thought too. Strange I can only see it on the face.

I don't think it's die deterioration. Doubled profiles are farily common on Large cents in the 1830s...I have an Unc 1834 with very distinctive profile doubling. Don't really know what causes it, though. I suspect something's loose in the hubbing process. Here's a thread I found with some other picks.

Looks like some form of doubling to me.

Thanks folks - I hadn't seen any of those other examples of doubling of the profile. If mine wasn't so worn it would look a bit similar to that 1831 example.
