Heres a coin i bought with a bunch of other morgans and peace dollars that was in a house fire. Saved by one of the clean up crew members. This 1885 CC weights 26.71, dia. 38.2mm/1.506". I took it to a coin exhange and passed the sigma 90% silver. What are the odds of it being real/fake? It was in a fire, what could it be worth? Any other input on this coin anyone can offer. 1885 CC Morgan (a lucky one) by keifer0671 posted Apr 6, 2024 at 6:19 PM 1885 CC Morgan reverse by keifer0671 posted Apr 6, 2024 at 6:19 PM Unfortunate event 2 by keifer0671 posted Apr 6, 2024 at 6:19 PM Unfortunate event by keifer0671 posted Apr 6, 2024 at 6:19 PM
Probably real, but would not straight grade, I’m afraid. NGC lists a slabbed 1885CC @$675.00 for AU50. I think it would ring up at AU DETAILS. Degraded, only able to bring half its’ value, if that…imo…Spark BTW…the rest of your fire sale is all junk silver, unless you find another “lucky” one or two.
Bought the stack for 350. Made 190 from the scrap. And left with 1885CC., 1891 and another morgan dollar along with 2 peace dollars. All in similar condition as 1885CC
I don't care for this piece. The relief seems too low for some reason. This one I have in an "all mints Morgan dollar set." I have my doubts that it is genuine.
To follow up, the 1885-CC is quite scarce in any grade below Mint State. It seems that most of the survivors never made it to circulation and never received very much "honest wear." For that reason, there very little spread on the Grey Sheet. The price spread is $480 in VG to $580 in MS-60. For just $100 more, you would get a great deal more detail. The reason is that there are very few pieces available in VG.
