Maybe I'm just getting frustrated with my photographic limitations! ;-) Also, I guess I'm wondering if the first photo looks the way it does as an artifact of the lighting and angle it was shot at. I take it, though, that you think that's not likely? When you've talked about contacting list-makers, do you mean people who run VAMworld?
Getting frustrated with photography is natural. I'm there at this moment. There are usually one to a few people that people go to that sort of make the call about a die variety which most others accept. Snow in Indians; Bland, Grellman and Wright in Large Cents, perhaps the operator of the VAM site. It is usually someone who has written an authoritative book on the varieties of the coin you have. I'm sure someone here can tell you an authority on this one. Recapturing the lighting that you got on the first attempt is tough. But you have the coin in hand and should be able to tell which image is most accurate.
VAMWorld is a Wiki-based site that was set up jointly by members of the SSDC with the blessings of Leroy Van Allen. Although there have been numerous books written on several date/mm VAM's, I don't think you would find anything dedicated to the "short list" of the 1882 O/S. There are several people on VAMWorld who are probably familiar with attributing the 82 O/S.........Logan McKechnie, John Coxe and Ash Harrison........just to name a few. Chris
