1882? Indian head double struck or double stamped?

Discussion in 'Error Coins' started by Eagles n Indians, Dec 9, 2018.

  1. I’m going through my coins and just found one I had forgot about. I think it is an 1882. If you look at the details there are secondary details and doubling slightly shifted across most of the features. I’m just looking for more insight on possible cause, not anything about the surface damage. Thanks

1882 or 1883, hard to tell. I'm not seeing any doubling but the shield on the reverse is really interesting. I don't see anything listed in the Snow books.

  4. There is some doubling around the wreath. If you look at the one and 8 in the date you can see parts of secondary numbers. Same thing with USA and one cent on the reverse

I would probably dip this in @BadThad ’s mixture and preserve it as much much possible.

Interesting.. Double Struck within collar with just a small amount of rotation.

Could be double struck and slightly rotated in collar

Yes, I'd put that baby in verdicare to preserve it as best as possible.

  13. Is it rare enough that there is still some value, or is it pretty much just junk?

Tough call. I'm not good at valuating these, but I'd say there's still a bit of value left. It's unfortunately corroded and cleaned. I also think the date is hard to read, but I see it as 1882. I'd be willing to pay around $20 for something like that, just to have a double struck IHC in my collection. That's not an offer, just trying to help you determine value. If you want an offer, feel free to PM me.

I will back the horse. A lot of mechanical doubling or shearing in areas, but not a true doubled die.
    IMO. Jim

I don't believe anyone called it a doubled die.
    It's probably double struck.

I had a hard time following this one earlier. I totally missed the shield, By the looks of the shield if it is authentic then triple struck.
But I am leaning towards altered,
