Hope your weekend is well. I was trying to vam a few of my Morgan’s today as I organizing my collection with a free afternoon.

I have this one pinned at Vam 6a O tilted left with the spike in the first 8 at 10 o’clock. I used @HawkeEye website for attribution.

Any opinions on the grade are welcome. I have it at 62 with semi PL fields. Also what do you think about the toning?

If that is a scratch from her chin across her jaw, then it would have to receive a DETAILS grade.

Thanks Chris. That is good to know. In hand it is hard to see but it is there. There is another small parallel one north of it. They look like slide marks from an album.

I'm thinking it's from a staple because the mark on the left end is where it began. A slide mark from an album would be "right to left" so wouldn't the heaviest contact be on the right end?

Not sure I think the color is natural.

The color is unusual, but it can also be the exposure on the camera. I would get it graded and end all doubt. If you look at my VAM 6A examples you will see that they are both well below MS and I try not to attribute from photographs. Yours may very well be a 6A, but there are several O Tilted Left varieties. I would also check the hair curls, inner ear, eagle wing polishing, and eagle wing-neck gap for documented traits.

If this is an MS example it is a rare bird, and I hope so. There is one on VAMworld that is an MS coin, but it is also marked as needing to be reviewed. Unfortunately the difference in "O Set Left" and "O Tilted Left" can be subtle, and I think subjective.

It looks more like an "O Set Left" variety to me, but that is why I hate doing this by photo. I am working on a study of those starting this month for the 1881-O. Unfortunately this takes a 13 VAM analysis to complete, so no small task. If you have an interest in VAMing and in the 1881-O you can follow along over the next few months.

Also, thanks for using the web site for analysis. That is why I built it and it is always nice to hear that others found the data helpful.

Thanks for the response. The website is phenomenal.

After looking through the vams again I believe it’s actually Vam 22 doubled 1-1 tilted O but I could be wrong.

I can see a notch in the top right of the 1 and the second one appears to have doubling at the top and down the left side.

The reverse does appear over polished on the right wing but what is getting me is the die polish lines that run under the eagles neck. This is most apparent on your 65PL Vam 22. They seem to match.
