You're probably right but I would like to see better pics of obverse and reverse of the op coin first
Remember, OP blind vaming, so this is what we have to work with . Hey bear, if you don't want it, send me the link, I'll take it ..
It certainly looks to have the counterclash doubled lips of 50a, which would rule out V7, but every VAM attribution requires both faces whether there's a smoking gun pickup on one face or not. It may be a new die pairing, or a previously-unknown die state. Could we have the reverse too, please? And $40 isn't unreasonable whether we have an attribution yet or not. Maybe not a "steal," but nobody should accuse you of throwing away your money on a slider 1880 at $40. I also want the reverse to help determine whether it's circulated or not.
I bought it, now being mailed to me. I knew it's a VAM just wasn't sure which one until Rick showed me. Now can't wait until I have it so I can look carefully over it.
I think Rick is trying to point out that the clash pretty much removes any possibility of it of it being an 80/79 since clashes tend to be unique to die pairings and OPs photo is clearer enough to identify it. Is there a possibility there was a clash at the end of the 79/80 run that perfectly matched another die pairing and a few coins popped out not to be discovered for over 100 years? ...I guess anything is possible... but it's extremely unlikely.
*shriek* Clashing in and of itself is too common on Morgans to really be "proof" of much, even with a little rotation added. However, this one sure appears to be counterclashed, where a second clashing incident (I'm thinking they're consecutive press movements) retransferred - in this case - clashed details of the lips back onto the obverse. These specific locations are not so easily duplicable, and almost definitive for 50A. The chance exists, though, so reverse markers should be confirmed also.
oh yeah, I had forgotten which coin this was. We're going to need full front and back shots. And bigger. That picture you just posted is criminally small. And the Date. We were talking about that date. What's going on with the upper loop in the first 8? On a quick comparison of hit marks, strike and rub, it appears to be the same coin as original photo.
I am not expert at cropping pictures. Yes there is a die clash top of the wing. I am sending it off to check for VAM.
