Grading is very subjective based upon the photos. From what I can see this coin is a very nice Morgan that I would grade as a MS-63 - MS-64. More favoring the MS-63 grade due to the bag marks on the primary focal areas on the Obverse. Assuming the MS-63 grade this coin would be worth ~$75. This is definetely a 79 Reverse. Although not familiar with NPG grading company it does appear they must be a Buy a Grade type company. If it were a 1879S MS-66 PL (Rev. 78) this coin would retail well over $6,000. None the less, hope you are not feeling a stinging sensation.
Doug seems to get the grades right all the time. SO does Leadfoot. I obviously agree with you though, it looks to me like a sharp MS63 Ruben
I think the coin is an MS64, but doubt highly that it is prooflike. I suggest you stay away from those third world things. Especially for coins like common date Morgan Dollars that are available all over the place in PCGS and NGC slabs. It is just an unnecessary risk IMO. Remember, cameo contrast does not mean prooflike. In order to qualify as prooflike, you need a clear reflection in the fields at a distance of 2 to 4 inches. Your coin looks a lot like this one in auction right now and this one will be cheaper. http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1126&Lot_No=9233
Interesting. That coin you point out actually doesn't have the strike his does so that will drive the cost up on it. It will be interesting to see where that coin sells at by the end of the weekend. I also think it is over graded. I don't see why the coin you pointed out is a 64. The whole coin has frost breaks. They must be exaderated by the photograph, but still. Ruben Safir
Ruben, Don't take this the wrong way, but you are tough on Morgans. Luster grazes and frost breaks do not affect the grade as much as bag marks. A photo can greatly exaggerate the appearance of a luster grazes which you pointed out, but this coin's appearance is consistent with that of a PCGS or NGC MS64 Morgan Dollar. I don't know what you are talking about with respect to strike; I don't see a discernible difference between the two coins. Here are the photos:
Maybe I am tough on Morgans. But I'll stick with my grade. I think his is a high end 63 and your is a flat 63. I'm sick of seeing ugly MS63 Morgans. And if they were Mercs that would be slashed down to MS61's Frost breaks have to mean something. As for the strike Look atht e blow up of both coins at the hair above the ear. Persian's coin is decerably sharper, IMO
Then you are going to hate this one. 1887 NGC MS63 and I am not kidding. She got in a knife fight and lost--LOL. The toning draws your attention away from it. Without the toning, I think this coin bags. Deep breath Ruben, deep breath
Notice the Bag Marks on the first coin at the left of the Liberty's Eyes these are a major detractor IMHO as compared to the second coin .
Is it visible, it's like looking standing at the edge of the grand canyon and missing it because of the incredibly beautiful sunset.
