Check out the PCGS price guide, Heritage Auctions ended listings, numismedia.com and there are many books on grading morgan dollars. I'm new, too! It appears to me to be in VF35 or EF40 condition. It has a lot of wear and even thought it's a 'better-date' morgan dollar, it's not a key-date coin. Others are free to challenge my grading. Like I said, I'm new, too. Spencer
I'm not sure why anyone would call it a "better-date". That overused term certainly doesn't apply to an 1879-O Morgan. This raw coin is worth melt, no more, in anything under AU. A very sweet AU58, graded and slabbed by PCGS, might be worth $50. Lance.
If you put this coin on line auction I think let's say $ 40.00 minus 10% average- $ 4.00 then minus your shipping cost of let's say 3.00 including Tracking confirmation plus Gas expenses I think this coin will be worth only $ 30.00.
Thanks for sharing this one 1879-O is a key date coin. you may want put in some acetone and distilled water see if you can get it to clean up but DO Not rub it clean, get a can air cleaner.you may find a vam hiding on it? who know what could be hide under that grime.it could bump the price up a lot or not.It worth check out. :kewl: http://www.vamworld.com/1879-O+VAMs www,ashmore.com/vam/update http://dmplvam.com/VAM/1879/
2,88700 minted & 1st New Orleans Minted Morgan Dollar. 87% were sent in to circulation according to Q Dave Bower a 1879-O is a key Date. But I not going to argue about it.
Agreed... as far as New Orleans minted Morgans, ONLY three key dates: 1893-O, 1895-O and 1903-O; at least that what it tells me here: http://www.morgandollarsilver.com/morgan-silver-dollars-what-are-the-key-dates/
As far as the OP's '79-O, here's a similar grade on eBay for a BIN of $43: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1879-O-Morg...97?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item45fd0955f1
1879-o Morgans are a condition rarity not a key date. I do not get excited about them until they get to MS64 or higher.
Agreed, once you get into the upper MS grades these quick expensive quick...much faster than most Morgan's. Also, on a side, the 1879-O is known for being a pretty well stuck date so none of what we are seeing could be considered a weak strike with this coin. Clearly it has been circulated...but it is all wear, unlikely any is from a weak strike.
agrred w/ Bowers, but he is talking about mint state coins being better and this is a circ & cleaned at that Bowers is talking about gem pieces.
Are you certain they are MS...I see what looks like luster breaks on the hair above the ear on both coins.
He never stated that anywhere in his book on Morgan Dollars. The only thing he mentioned about the 79O's were that they have the reverse of the 79 with slanted arrow feathers, but then goes on to mention the weak strikes known from the New Orleans Mint.
