Picked this up for 3 cent on the dollar. Is this even real? Passed magnetic test, weighted around 26.760.
The dink on the face concern me.

Not so much a Morgan guy, but would like to see the input on this one...3 cents on the dollar...did it go above $1 :)

Let just say I got it way way way cheap to the point of doubting my damn self.

What makes you think it's a proof?

@longshot I don't see s or cc marking plus it is very crisp and got shiny surface. Camera did a terrible job of capturing the shine.

Not a proof, philly mint business strike, 7 feathers reverse of 1878. Decent luster from what I can see, a lot of neat die cracks, and a patch of hairlines on the reverse around the star between America and dollar. Lower ms, maybe ms details, cleaned. Hard to tell from the pics.

Did they made 1878 Morgan dollar without Mint mark? I know there are O, S, CC, and this one without any mint mark.
I checked the mint mark area with microscope and I don't see any signs of tempering.
More photos of coin with luster.

Looks like a normal 1878 Morgan with the 7TF Reverse of 1878. A fairly common date Morgan. It's not a proof, it's a regular business strike. That ding on the cheek really hurts this coin in my opinion. I don't think it would grade any higher than MS63.

I would say value is probably $100-$125 or so.

So How can I tell the difference between this coin and a proof 1878 7TF reverse of 1878?

The strike would be a ton better and the rims would have a more square appearance. They only minted 250 proof 1878 Morgan's with 7TF reverse. I don't know for sure...but I highly doubt what that low of a mintage and the care that proofs are made with they would have used a reverse die with a crack like that. I'm not an expert in Morgan proofs...but I just don't see that happening with a first year proof design with such a low mintage.

I carefully looked at it again and all the lines and the damage on the faces are exposing fresh layer of silver. 99% sure they are carelessly handled damages.

It's not a bad coin. It's nearly 150 years old. They get dinged up.
