I cleaned it yes bc it was very dirty when I first got it...I used this silver cleaner stuff and just a soft cloth. I hope that didn't ruin it at all!
Why not? I didn't know that was bad...I cleaned it cuz I was trying to see if it had 7 or 8 tail feathers...it just has 7 but b4 it was so dirty I couldn't tell...
Silver value now that you shined it up so nice. If you hadn't touched it, it might have had some collector value.
Unfortunately coin collectors are so anal that they look at coins with 5X and 10X and higher magnifying lenses and look for scratches. That's what polishes do, scratch the coins.
cleaning coins is generally a very bad idea. The only time it should be done is when there is environmental damage to a coin and you want to preserve it. In this case you would clean it, but if you don't know exactly what you're doing it's best to send it to a numismatist that knows what to do. Other than that you're ruining the coin and it's collector value.
@K.O. I'm not buying the OP's story. I think she is just pulling your leg. If she's smart enough to know the difference between an 8TF and a 7TF, then she is smart enough to know that a coin should not be cleaned. Chris
Do you know what this "silver cleaner stuff" is called? To be honest, the coin, in its present condition, strikes me as having had more done to it than a light wipe-down with a soft cloth. It is possible that your cleaning isn't totally responsible for what you're seeing.
Lol...I just looked up 1878 Morgan silver dollar when I first got it and Read that some of them have an error and have 8 tf. I have read that u shouldn't clean them with abrasive rags or scrub them down...I didn't think a silver polish would damage the coin. I researched the errors that the coin could have but did not look into how it should or shouldn't be cleaned
Hey we all did something like that in our collecting lives , just figure it a learning experience on a somewhat common coin .
@cpm9ball Oh come now, give her the benefit of the doubt! I don't find it entirely unlikely that someone not into coins would find one, look it up online and see listings for 7TF, 8TF or 7/8TF and then attempt to see which theirs is.
Nevertheless, I'm still skeptical. We have several members who like to mess with the rest just for the reactions. Chris
