Ok I am roughly 2 years into collecting Morgan Dollars. I just purchased a 1878-CC gave $100 for it and it has some wear but overall im happy, then I noticed the CC mint mark was odd looking could this be a VAM or what also what condition would my 1878-CC roughly be, im so happy that this is my very 1st CC Morgan! Any advice or info would be much appreciated from the community, I can provide more pictures upon request! Also next I purchased a 1886-P Morgan for $35 and noticed some major flaws literally every where on both sides. Id like some information on what exactly I have here and a opinion on the condition and value of my 1886-P Morgan, any information or advice once again would be very much appreciated from this community. Im excited to see if my 2 latest purchases were worth it. I can provide more pictures upon request.
As for the 86, read this page from Vamworld. You are seeing die clashes: http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compute.amazonaws.com/wiki/Clashed_dies
For the 78cc, compare your coin to the Vamworld reverse listings: http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compute.amazonaws.com/wiki/1878-CC_Reverses
Thanks for your reply good sir, I have checked out the exact website prior to your message but I cant seem to come to terms with exactly which VAM my 1878 CC would fall under, then again Im fairly new to VAM identifying.
Thats what im having a difficult time with! Im back and forth on the particular VAM my 1878-CC belongs to. So you think that it would be close to AU58 quality? And Ive been thinking of sending it off to be officially graded but not sure if it would be worth it but if its a rare and wanted VAM, would that be a good idea?
Have a careful look at VAM 22. Date position and mintmark and die markers. ALL Morgan and Peace dollars are Vam's and working out the die stage to correctly attribute the Vam is what is hardest for me.
No, I'm not sure what a previous poster was thinking, but at best it will come back as VF details, cleaned. Sorry if this is a surprise to you. The other coin is a problem coin also. Overdipped, no luster showing in the pictures. Now, vams are not my thing, so I can't comment on that. I would suggest buying coins that are already certified until you train your eye a little more. Happy collecting!
