1877 Trade Dollar 'S' VF Condition - What do we know?

  1. Hi All,

Just picked up the attached image for about £130. Only picked it up as I do not see them often!
I understand it to be the most common of the US Trade Dollars (both year and mint) however I wanted to share it here for your knowledge and opinions.

    Thank you.

I'd say it's a nicely struck Trade with about XF45 wear. There appears to be some roughness on Liberty's extended arm but I may not be reading the photo correctly I also see signs of a previous light cleaning then retoning. It's a decent looking coin and I think you did well for the amount spent. Most important for raw Trade Dollars, it's GENUINE!

  4. Hi Ksparrow,
I can see your points - I was slightly worried it could be a forgery due to the odd tones seen on it but bought it anyway...

XF 45 brings a smile to my face. I have started conservatively grading all my coins rather than over-grading them and then being hit by disappointment!

Can I ask what the tale-tell signs of a genuine Trade Dollar are?

    Thanks!!
