Here is a recent purchase that I'd like to hear grade guesses on. I'll give my thoughts, the grade, etc in a day or so. Happy guessing!
XF40 Details. I have a feeling it is cleaned, due to halos around the stars and some devices despite the lack of luster. Edit: I just realized the water doesn't go all the way to Liberty's dress. I'm now concerned this is a fake... @Mark Metzger are you trying to pull a fast one on us here?
So, lots of correct guesses out there. The coin was graded XF Details Improperly Cleaned I think the grade is spot on. My son purchased the coin with the intention of cracking it out for his U.S. Type Set. He wanted to get a graded one for the purposes of authentication given the number of forgeries out there. The coin makes a great addition to a pretty righteous type set.
Agreed. I do think it makes a great example for a type set, and at $130 shipped I think I got a pretty good bargain compared to what else is available at that price point. My son sold a partial Indian Head Cent book to finance the purchase.
Good for him. I was never disciplined enough to sell one thing to buy something else. I think it's a great example as well, and if I were willing to buy a problem coin, I'd want it to look that nice and be at a good price like that
No fast ones being pulled here. Not sure why the water doesn't go all the way to the dress. Here is the coin before being freed from its plastic tomb.
Interesting. I'll have to find the source, but I thought that I read somewhere that it's one of the tells for forgeries.
Okay, I couldn't find the article, perhaps I just noticed that most of the genuine examples I see in the "how to" for finding forgeries shows the water all the way at the dress. Here's a good article for anyone looking for help determining authentic and fake Trade Dollars: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/how-do-you-spot-fake-trade-dollars-anyway.63695/
No question on it being real. I knew as soon as I looked at it. I was at xf cleaned too. It’s recovering nicely and at $130 a nice buy. A perfect coin for an album. Just save the label and pics of it in the slab for future authentication purposes I like it
Does one of you know of a different type 2 obverse? @Insider @kaparthy @Mainebill That’s my 1877-S Trade Dollar: Contrary to the OPs coin, the water touches Liberty’s legs.
