Common date is real been cleaned with in an inch of its life is a type 2 reverse all the s mints from 75-8 quite common I'd wAit and find one with nice original skin me I'd grade it xf-45 is a baggy one too a nice one can be bought reasonable if you wait you can buy a nice xf trade with good original color for $250 if you look
Many thanks for the whole help guys, in conclusion, the coin is authentic, but this brutally cleaned?
Harsh cleaning does not make weak denticals. Unless you are suggesting it has been so abrasively cleaned they have worn the denticals away.
I'm satisfied that the coin in the OP is genuine, if cleaned. It is not unusual to see weakness in the dentils in places but they should not look malformed. The dentils look properly shaped to me. If buying a common date TD for type I too would hold out for one with the original skin, like Mainebill's superb example. The type II rev is somewhat more scarce on the 75-s as the dies went into service late in the year and most were sent for export (and subsequently chopmarked). Too bad about the cleaning!
Yes, the cleanliness does not shine well, but one of these, in a net extremely fine degree, has a value of the double of the coin in auction. The auction ends tomorrow, already we will see... Guys, thank you very much for the help.!
As a man of finite means trying to scratch out an enjoyable collection, this kind of remark is music to my ears.
As an entry level example it is genuine and if surfaces are unimportant then if it's cheap and only if cheap then go for it but remember it will be a hard resell in the future. I'd say market would be around $150. or you can save your money and wait for one with its original skin. Trade dollars are an extremely tough series to find problem free examples. If you look in the big auctions ha stacks etc a full 50% are details graded most often for cleaning or damage or chopmarked. And I'd say 80-90% of higher grade ones have been dipped blast white. Add in the multitude of fakes and their real tough. Myself I'm trying to (slowly) collect the entire series with proofs (no 84-5) in xf or better with original toning and surfaces. Yup a tall order!! But be warned trade dollars are addictive! And beautiful!
Just so you understand that the coin has lost its value from being harshly cleaned. Nobody is trying to insult your means or desire to have a collection. It was asked what we thought of the coin, and many think it harshly cleaned, which renders it not marketable.
Well, finally I did not obtain it, several offers by the end did that it was desisting from her. I think that now is better (for my) to focus in other pieces and to leave the silver dollars by the end. Possibly the next one is the Bust Half Dime, or the Liberty Quarter Type One..
I think that was a good move, Seba79. No need to be in a hurry and feel free to post anything you have questions about. Happy collecting!
If choosing a Trade dollar for a type example, I would consider something like this one (I have no connection to the seller) http://www.jrobinsonrarecoins.com/dollars/1876-trade-dollar-ngc-xf45
