The 1873 shows 2 types, Position A and Position B Does anyone know the difference between the two? This is one I just picked up... Any help would be appreciated. .
Is there writing/printing on the rim? With some coins "position" refers to where the rim printing begins. Position A would be one starting location. Position B would be a different starting location. With some coins the position may increase value. With others it does not. With the coin you posted, Position B has a slight increase in value in higher grades.(see link below) You would have to do more research, or ask an expert on these coins (not I), in order to know which one you have. Sometimes, NGC will state the starting point of the inscription, i.e. 2 o'clock, 10 o'clock, etc.. Sometimes the inscription will actually change depending on the coin, and which version, you may have. There is much more info on this subject than I can answer here. Other members should chime in. belgium-5-francs-km-24-1865-1878-cuid-1042413-duid-1283829
There are two types of that coin, "small head" (which is what you have) and "large head". But yes, in this case the "A" and "B" apparently refer to the edge inscription, probably its orientation. Some collectors make that differentiation, even though usually the inscription is added randomly, see the info here for example. Not sure though whether that is actually what the characters refer to in this case. Christian
Ah, see the "Comments" section of this page. Still, at least with modern circulation coins such a differentiation does not make sense in my opinion ... Christian
