That maybe the lighting and how it reflects off the toned surfaces.
So many of these were in old albums which explains why the toning being so different or undesirable.
I have a1845 ms 62 the obv. Is pretty the rev. Yuck!
These little buggers are hard to image.. When my scope was working that was the best bet for shooting them ....but the pits for anything over the size of a nickel.
Now that my PC crashed I'm limited to doing anything till my brother in law fixes it.

Heavy tone probably refined after an old dip. I think au 50 though as a lot of that is strike not wear

Bill: I’m with you; looks like minimum AU50 to me, probably better. From what I’ve seen looking at seated coinage, the area across the chest is among the quickest to show wear. I don’t see any at all here.
And I’m enough of a heretic to think that a LIGHT dip would greatly improve its looks!

Hey Bill good to see you back!:D

Quite a few of the 72's were struck on proof dies

The consensus seems to be EF40. I was thinking VF30 or 35, though. The L is the only issue I see on the obverse, but seems like a lot of wear on the reverse, to me.

It's a nice coin, though. I'd love to have one that nice in my collection.
