The Red Book has two varieties listed for 1870, 1871 & 1872 IHC's, "Shallow N" and "Bold N". I looked up the identifying characteristics online and got good pictures. Now I have to check if Snow's guide includes them. I asked NGC if they include those in their VarietyPlus attributions. Their response: "Shallow N is labeled REVERSE OF 69 under VP Service. Bold N is common and not distinguished at all." I currently have asked the same question of PCGS. Their listing of recognized varieties don't include them. I want them to confirm that. When I get their answer I'll come back and update this post. Has anyone here gotten into this?
I kept telling people that the 2019 Red Book was a HUGE update on varieties. No one wanted to listen.
I've got the 2018 Red Book and it lists the varieties. I'll be buying them slabbed in MS-64 or -65, probably BN. I'll want them attributed. NGC recognizes those varieties. Right now it appears that PCGS does not. So when I ship them to get the attribution it looks like NGC will get my business.
