Earlier this year I bought a “dateless” large cent for $28 which turned out to be a scarce 1797 S-121b.

As it turns out, that’s no longer my best cherrypick. Yesterday, I saw this 1868 Indian Head Cent on Ebay for $28 and immediately became excited and I knew I had to buy it.

Now let’s play a game here. Can anyone tell me why I was so excited to buy this coin for $28, and why it’s easily worth three figures? It was on my “Top 12” list which I took down for copyright reasons, but will bring back sometime in the near future.

I have a feeling that @C-B-D might know this one.

Should get it in hand around June 5th.

Oh man... I am on vacation and away from my resource materials...... Seems to me they are somewhat scarce because many cents from this period were melted down at some point..... Am I reasonably close?

    Yup! 1868 Snow-13. PCGS says $200 in AG-03!

Pop of 2 coins problem-free at PCGS... in all grades. A F15 (the top pop) sold this year for $800. Wow!

I’d say this coin is problem free and a solid AG-03. Maybe I’ll consider submitting to PCGS.

I would, just so I could say I had one of 3 known, haha!

Is that because the leaf goes into the shield?
    Comparison photos would help.

Not exactly. There is a massive die gouge going through the lower right part of the shield. It’s an eyeball variety that anyone can pick.

    It has arrived!

And it’s much better than the seller pics suggest. I still think it’s an AG, but a high one as far as AGs go. The reverse rims are still mostly visible!

The gouge is clearly visible and I can even see repunching still on the date!
