I read that many of these were struck with the same force as the CN variety. Does that explain the artifacts around the four? I've included a few images. image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg

I see, so this coin was struck when the die was almost new to have this degree of doubling. Good article, thanks!

You shouldn't have Longacre doubling at the date though.

The area on the "4" is from a defective digit punch. These show up an nearly all CN cents from the same date. Rick Snow explains this well in his attribution guide.

Yep--nice clear example of the defective punch and Longacre outlines. :)

Does this enhance the value or is it common?

My Snow guides don't list a premium for it, but then again maybe some collectors like it...

True, to some extent, value is in the eye of the beholder.
