1863 Threepence, Currency Rarity - NOT MAUNDY

    I brought this coin up because there are some generally held fallacies about the Victorian 3d series.
    Many 3ds offered as currency are in fact of Maundy origin. Secondly, Maundy coins and 3ds in particular are usually BUT not always Prooflike. Many are satin in appearance.

    The key is in the type of strike that is often difficult to describe, but with either PL or Satin there is a type of definition that is not seen in currency strikes; similarly the dentils, etc.
