Here's an 1863 Cu-Ni IHC for my Registry Type Set. It's a minor variety, RPD FS301 S2. The coin is slabbed as such by PCGS, and is graded MS 64. The images are by Bob Campbell, and I think he did an excellent job.
Thank you for your kind comments. Being Cu-Ni there is no color grading, as nominally the color should stay the same over time.
Nice one, Sy! I don't know how these should grade, but I'll take a stab and say that the specks on the obverse perimeter held it back. Am I correct or should I go back to submitting SQ's & Sac's for high grades? Chris
Agreed w the above sentiments. ... I don't even see 1 scratch, ding or Mar.... And I don't think I even hafta be a copper head to grade one of these,(yes, I've dabbled) And don't tell me the spots , and the mint-made strike thru on the E precluded it from a higher grade....(it can't be???) The only thing I can come up with, (half-buzzed might I add) Is there is a huge price jump to the next grade???
Fabulous coin! I am curious to know how many coins are in your type set? I have seen so many U.S. type sets of varying degrees of completeness. Mine has 152 at present, but is likely to expand.
I have NEVER been able to talk on the phone with any PCGS grader (while they were at the office) in three tries. Sandy Locker (if she is still there) has been exceptional on the phone when I alerted PCGS of something. Correction, I think Miles returned my call once in the past before he left for NGC. IMO, the spots kept it from a getting a higher grade, It is graded correctly to my standards - a very attractive coin.
Watch what you ask for.... just like saying Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice 3 times. TG for the iggy button !
Very nice IHC Skyman I'm waiting on a 1862 to come back from Anacs that should fall in the mid- MS range.
64 and 65 both represent sizable jumps for this one. They could have dinged it for a little strike weakness (the reverse is actually kinda flat) and a little spotting, but it seems a coin that would Green Bean rather handily.
It turns out that this coin is the "Poster Child" for the variety on PCGS's CoinFacts. Here's the link: http://www.pcgscoinfacts.com/Coin/Detail/412748
Right... PCGS population for this variety is 2... this coin and (another coin or a resubmission of this coin)?
