I recently found a Confederate States of America One Cent Coin and a twenty dollar Confederate coin. The one cent one has "CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA 1861" around the face side. The face is a woman's with what looks like a hat on top of her head. Hair is sticking out at the bottom of the "hat". On the other side it says "1 CENT" and has leafs and stuff around the words. It is a copper/bronze color. There is also a scratch on it that shows a gold color underneath the bronze/copper color. The 20 dollar coin is gold colored. On the face side, There is a woman sitting, with a spear, a shield, and a piece of paper. There is tall grass behind her and a barrel, a box, and another object to her left. Around her, there are the words "CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA 1861". On the other side, there are the words "CSA 20 DOLLARS" in the middle of 15 stars(the stars are in a circle around the words). There is also what appears to be a chain, circled around the 15 stars. There are all the Confederate states in each chain link and four chain links are empty. I wanted to know if these coins are real (there isn't the word copy on the coins) and if they were how much are they worth. Thanks. PS: There are the pictures everyone is asking for!
Presumably the cent is one of the restrikes, likely from the 50's or 60's (if I remember correctly). Don't know anything about the double eagle, but probably something similar. However, pics are definitely neccesary to say anything for sure. And welcome aboard.
Trey, Welcome to the forum! There are several threads on the site about the Confederate cent, and here is a page that seems to show the $20 you describe. http://www.csacurrency.com/csacoin/csa20dol.htm Since it was never minted, it is a fantasy, and not protected by the anti-copy rule. Many were made as tokens for souvenirs, especially at CW re-enactment events and anniversaries. There are also photos of the most common "restrikes" or transfer-die-struck cenr. The former are Haseltine restrikes and the latter are like this one on ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/1861-Confed...712?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c6655cf68 Photos are needed for more accurate identification. The 20 dollar coin is a complete fantasy. The only 20 dollar coin the CSA ever struck were 1861-O double eagles using USA dies. The cent may be in order of likelihood a fantasy, a copy of a Bashlow restrike, a real Bashlow restrike, a Haseltine restrike, or a genuine CSA cent. The Haseltine restrike or the CSA cent are so extremely unlikely I hesitate to even mention them. Since it was found along with a fantasy 20 dollar the odds of it being a fantasy is greatly increased.
The pics are appreciated, but really are not good enough to tell anything. You'd be better off talking to a dealer who can look at it in-hand. Joe
