1858/7 Flying Eagle Cent. Strong overdate? Weak? Or just a plain 1858?

I think this is a weak 1858/7 flying eagle, but I'm no expert on these. What do ya think?

Weak overdate. How lustrous is this coin?

Nevermind . . . I think I just figured out that you don't yet own it. Even though it is presently graded MS62, I think they'll push it down to AU58 if they designate it a Weak 1858/7. It doesn't look lustrous enough for the UNC grade, and I think I see some wear on the eagle's breastfeathers and the maple leaves.

Nice looking coin. A little surprised that it got an MS instead of an AU, but that may be due to a weak strike. Not convinced that I see a 7 under the 8 though.

AU58 and yeah, the 7 is just barely visible.

You guys, they don't downgrade coins when you send it in to the variety added. So if it is an MS62, then it stays an MS62.

This coin does not appear on PCGS' list of varieties that they will attribute. Consequently, I believe they will treat it as a different coin, and may assign a new grade, if they decide to acknowledge it as the overdate.

ToughCoins, I'll send it in as a mechanical error and they'll add "1858/7 weak" to the holder. Check CoinFacts. It's a variety you don't have to pay for. It is considered a "major variety."

That’s an overdate for sure. As far as weak or strong goes, I’ll leave that to the experienced on this series.

I’m not about to argue with Mike.

I'll let you know what happens. I bought it and I'll send it in as mechanical error.

Just for the record they reserve the right to downgrade coins anytime they're sent in for anything. The guarantee would apply if they did though.

I know they pay out on that guarantee when you submit doctored coins or severely overgraded coins. But AU58 is essentially a good looking MS62. Market-wise, they're interchangeable, would you agree?

In a lot of cases I would say the 58 is the superior coin to the 62.

Hard to beat a good-looking AU58 with just the right touch of having been in commerce briefly.

Now it's an 1858/7 weak, PCGS MS62. Yay! I sent it as a mechanical error, so even shipping was free. Didn't have to pay a thing, thankfully.
