I wouldn't say it's cocky. Snow numbers are how FE cents are classified, in the same manner as VAMs are used for Morgans and Overtons are used for Bust Halves. The Snow varieties are what the hobby has accepted.

Thanks for coming back and following up with this. What was the origianl point about these coins again, other than the normal, they are great and I love FEs? Are they dished?

It is not listed in Snow as a variety, so, it is either 1) damage; 2) fake; or 3) so rare that Snow did not know about it.

at least in his old reference, I just saw the note above, and it is apparently in the new reference.

Various people have commented on this coin, in this forun and in the FLY-IN CLUB forum, and everyone has their own learned opinion. Great. That's what I asked for. Rick Snow agreed to look at the coin and come up with a description. Whatever it is, it's a coin that's unique and fun to collect.
I'll keep everyone up to date with new info as I get it.

It's back from Eagle Eye Rare Coins

I just got my coin back from Rick Snow. We discussed this coin by phone and in a letter. Rick stated that it is "a new variety!"

His description is: SNOW 22 1857, Repaired OF.
Obv. 22 (LE) The F in OF is reworked, possibly after extensive die rust pitted the die. Much of the denticles are missing or blurred due to the die rust.
Rev. AB: No die defects noted.

He said he wanted to take photos of the coin for plates and future publications so I told him to crack it out of it's ANACS slab have at it.

:hail:Thanks to all of you who cared to respond to this thread and to those who just dropped in to read about this coin. This forum and its inhabitants really stirred my interest in collecting coins all over again.
When I get some plate photos I'll post them when I can.

GDJMSP, remind me from time to time and when I finally get around to making some more images I'll post my 1871 Straits Settlement 5 cent (Key date for the series worth about $1,500) that's been certified by ANACS, only thing is it is a crudely done altered date piece. (7 is altered from an 8 and the date is the wrong size for an 1871.) It isn't easy to find fakes in the slabs from the major services, but they do exist.

Conder - while I have heard of authentication mistakes made by PCGS, yours is the first by the old ANACS that I have ever heard of - I appreciate the info. I'd love to see pics sometime.
