People have been altering cents like that for over 200 years. PMD

While it is vulgar, this alteration has been made for as long as the coins have been. It is in the same category as hobo nickels and potty dollars. Perhaps there is a "spoiler tag" and warning tag that can be posted, but I think showing this coin is useful for future collectors.

As to the OP - no, this is not an error. This was someone altering the coin to be funny.

Just a damaged coin.

 

The altered word is vulgar, sure, but as others have pointed out, this particular alteration is also part of this hobby's history, and our history in general. Whitewash or "moderate" any part of history that offends the most sensitive of sensibilities and what do you get?

I had one of those altered Braided cents once. And somehow I have no idea what happened to it.

 

Do you have any idea what the value on one of those coins would be? not sure if you saw the photo before it was removed.
