    Hi y’all,

Just picked up this beauty this week. The 1855 $10 Liberty head is in an old Anacs holder (EF40) and has some beautiful reddish toning around the obverse edges. It seems to be under graded in my opinion. But I won’t break it out of the cool old slab. Just wondering if I got fleeced on this purchase. I paid $1,565 total to have this coin in hand. Let me know what you guys think. Any feedback appreciated.

With the ever so slight wear on the high points and smoothness of the dentiles and rim the grade seems quite accurate. Overall, a very nice specimen to possess. I'm with you on leaving it in the early holder.

You didn't get a great deal, but you didn't get fleeced either.

PCGS Coin Facts says the retail value of the 1855 $10 gold in EF-40 is $1,600. You did okay because today’s PCGS EF-40 might not be as good.

I made a similar purchase with an 1839, Type of 1838 $10 gold in ANACS EF-45. Financially, it might not have been a great deal, but it did add a reasonably attractive example of a tough minor type coin to my collection. All No Motto $10 gold coins are hard to find in attractive conditions.

You said it brother. Those no mottos are sought after. I do feel those old holders are usually under graded compared to modern holders. Besides that these older coins are subject to weaker strikes sometimes. I feel it could Atleast get an EF 45. The luster it has does not come through in the photos. Either way I’m excited to own one. It’s my first $10 lib
