Don't have enough information for attributing large cents but $44 for this large cent was a great deal.

Doesn't surprise me considering the amount of time it takes me to ID the variety of some of the large cents. I know there are several collectors in here who are MUCH more experienced and could do a faster and more accurate IDing than I. I've got two large cent references but that's like having two clocks. With one clock you always know the time. With two clocks you are never quite sure. Plus I've never tried to do variety identification on Braided Hair large cents. I'm still very shaky working with the Matron Heads. BOTTON LINE: IF it's an N-30 it's the key coin of the 1854 Large Cents. It's an R-7.

Ah ha! I got the R-7 rating from Noyes' book. Then I looked at Grellman's book and he had it at R-5+. So it looks like Grellman was the source. See, what did I say about having two watches
I don't think this is the N-30. The obverse seems to be correct but the reverse is subtly different. Here are pics of a TPG graded example of a N-30 from Heritage Auctions . Check out the letters in AMERICA.
I don't see the difference in the letters. Both coins seem to have the 2 lines connecting the leaf on lower right to the wreath. That was my tell on the reverse. Sent the coin to Grellman to verify. We shall see.
My Newcomb book only goes to N-25. He always mentions when a die is used on more than one variety which would be useful here. My concern was that that the bases of ICA in AMERICA are all connected in the photos of the N-30. Check out the N-21. The faint RPD could have been polished away if the die saw extended use. I'm just playing the devils advocate here and I wouldn't place a bet on any of the three varieties with the same date placement. Definitely let us know what Grellman says.
The later date Large Cents have so many die pairings that it makes attribution very difficult. I've been interested in this for a few years now and get it wrong often but usually I can narrow it down to a couple choices. You are right, that is a bummer, in XF that would be a $500 cherry pick.
