Wonderful find if it holds up under scrutiny by NGC or PCGS. I only own one Dahlongia coin and it is an 1845, $5, NGC AU55. Something looks wrong with the D to me but you should check it out and keep your friends in on the reward if it gets graded.
Just curious, what is the known surviving population of this date and mint mark? The three dollar princess is my favorite coin and have two in my collection.
Doug Winter's Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint, second edition (2003) puts the surviving population at 100-125 coins in all grades, with 22-27 in AU and 2-4 in Mint State. In AU55 the combined NGC/PCGS population is 35 "submissions" with 51 finer (the vast majority of them AU58 NGC pieces). Of course the pop data could be inflated by a factor of 2 or more. In Mint State the combined population is 13, again almost certainly inflated by resubmissions, crossovers, and the like. The 1854-D AU55 is a rare, rare coin and this has been a great story to follow along. Good luck zekeguzz on the Floor Auction! Best Regards, George
The day I state here that I am disappointed in any way from a $35k find, I not only give permission, but beg for every available member here to beat me in the head with a shovel... WoW!
well ... yes ... it does seem a bit sad to be disappointed with $35,000 falling into your lap ... just take a deep breath and count your blessings!
TBH, after looking at the other AU55's they've auctioned in the past, I think it was a tad overgraded, hence the lower price.
