Hi Jello, Just looked again under a 30X loupe and don't see anything. I'll try to get better pictures for you a little later. Thanks for taking a look at the coin in general! Darryl
I would love to have an MS 1853 Quarter and Half! I've got some that would probably grade VF, but have always wanted them in MS. The thing is, when I've got that kind of money to spend, I've bought gold from the mint.
Thank you for verifying my point of view on this, as I suggested that price range right from the start. No one likes hearing their coin does not deserve the owners grade expectations, but fact is fact.
Forgive me, but the coin you provided this view of, does not appear to be the same coin in the op's original post.
LD, do you think the coin in the photo jello provided is the same as the one in the original OP"s example ? I don't think so.
You are funny - I had another dealer I resapect give me an entirely different opinion and that's all any of this is. I respect Matt's opinion and the way he presented it. You don't have the coin in hand, while I can accept that I could be wrong, (and I do have the coin in hand) how about showing a little respect. You gave an opinion, and I appreciate that. Just because you said it, does not mean that you are correct.
This is why I dislike offering any of my grade assessments in depth. Respect ? where in my comments was I disrespectful ? I may have made negative comments about your coin, but not you personally. The "dealer" who provided you with the better grade opinion, if you are so inclined see what that dealer would offer for the coin or ask what he believes the coin would bring at auction. He may have given an entirely different opinion, will you share what that was?
I asked for an opinion and you seem to feel that you opinion is fact based on a couple pictures. People need to remember it is very difficult even for people that make a living at this to accurately grade based on pictures. Hear is another opinion from another trusted dealer: "I see this particular coin on occasion. The MAJORITY are either well worn or harshly cleaned. It IS a one year type and really cool to me. Yours is cleaned but not horribly and has great detail - a combination I RARELY see. I have one with less detail than yours - maybe VF+ and not cleaned and the color is darn near black. That's why so many ARE cleaned my friend. They tone ugly but I don't care. $85? I think you did fine. You could probably sell it for that while being totally honest and it seems YOU like it." Not saying his opinion is fact either. So when you say "the facts are the facts" IMO that is either a naive statement or you cannot accept the idea that your opinion might not be correct. I believe the object of this site is to share opinions and try to learn from them. No one on this site knows it all or doesn't make mistakes from time to time. Discussing the details of a given opinion helps everyone to learn more about what you saw that helped form an opinion. Anything more than that is really not necessary. Just accepting someones opinion without understanding it defeats the purpose of asking.
And the fact is, is simply that the opinions I gave differed from what you wanted to hear. Very much on the negative side of things. The dealer who told you that your coin was not harshly cleaned, well personally I would very much be inclined to disregard any further comments. That's just nonsense. Yes most of the survivors of this issue are cleaned. Now you have had more than my opinion alone but I'll guess you need to side with your Dealer, who told you what you wanted to hear. Those of us who have provided you with an opposing opinion, well you certainly don't have believe any of what we say. Those who choose not to learn, certainly won't. If you purchased the coin for $85.00 you did do fine. But to suggest as you did, a FMV for your coin might be $120.00 or more if you still think , as you previously stated that you think this coin is closer to AU details, well your simply trying to fool yourself. Now the dealer knows what you paid for the coin, what do you think he would pay you for the coin? He would offer VF+ dollars, as LD outlined for you, and my initial value offered , Between $35-60.00 seems appropriate. God Bless if you can make a return $50.00 on your coin over and above your cost. And seriously, there was never anything harsh or otherwise personally disrespectfully conveyed or intended in our discussion's. It's like selling a used car, rarely if ever does that prospect buyer or dealer agree to what you feel your car's worth or condition you think it's in . More often than not it truly isn't. As owners we always tend to try to put into financial terms, our pride of ownership of whatever it is. Coins, cars. etc. Discussion aside, please have a Happy Holiday. Tom
You too Tom, Merry Christmas I tried to do the best I could Jello (different angles and different lights).
