Maybe the pair of scratches between star K1 and the bust and the small ding to the left of the ribbon on the reverse might have something to do with the verdict. That's the only thing I see that might preclude it from a CAC stamp.

I'm wondering specifically if the surfaces have been deemed unoriginal, as Tom B suggested.

Can you call them and talk to them about the coin? I would be very interested in understanding why for this coin. It is still a very sweet coin.

Yes, if you call CAC you may be able to speak with one of the folks who evaluated the coin or, at least, with a secretary who can relay the message. They are generally willing to help in cases such as this.

Sorry to hear the news, Matt.

I would suggest you take Tom's advice and reach out to CAC.

They were wonderfully helpful on my submissions and I learned as much or more from the coins that didn't get the sticker as those that did.

Here are the 2 coins from the order that passed the grade.

Very nice. Which really makes me wonder why the original one did not get a CAC sticker.

I'm thinking the color is what stopped this one. The surfaces of the 1850 are very nice. I was a little surprised it didn't get the nod... But it's still a heck of a coin.

Based on the pics, I really like the 1850. Perhaps it was the reverse rim ding that kept it from CAC approval.
