I've spent over an hour with this coin trying to attribute it. My problem is whether it's an open 5 or a closed 5. Sounds simple enough, right? Not so fast. P1010693rev_opt.jpg P1010692ob_opt.jpg P1010692obdate.jpg Does the 5 have to be completely closed to qualify as closed? If closed this is an N-12, if open, an N-23. Thanks, Ed

Well, your best date diagnostic to determine the difference between the two varieties (the front of the 1 in the date) is nicked, so this one is a pain. From what I can see, I'd lean toward the N-23. However, it's important to look at some of the other markers for confirmation and you may have to give the coin a light brushing to bring them out. Do you have Grellman's book?

Thanks. I have been using Newcombs book. The left side of the base of the one took a hit and doesn't actually contact the denticle IMO.
