    Cool little tag sale find.
Someone take me to school and give me a est. value opinion.

    Tall date?
    Grade?
    Value?

Around $15 in it's condition (maybe slightly more). It has great details except the scratches and edge hits really hurt it. How much did you pay, I'm just curious.

    I'm thinking "Fine Details, Damage"

Sorry but it looks like someone took a pen knife to it to clean off the gunk. Still a nice tag sale find.

It looks to be a small date to me

I had a feeling it was small date after looking at the 6 on the coin facts page.

    The 2x2 said tall date.

    $17
Its ugly....I thought the details were ok for the price. The scratches and rims are distracting..But i don't see many local so i took it home.

I would pay around $20-$25 at my shop, though I know that you could get $15 at the least, $17 is an ok price.

It's a small date for sure, and not one of the valuable small date varieties, they both have holes in the ear. I would put the sharpness grade at F12 and would net it down quite a bit for the multiple rim dings and scratches.

Value is tough, but $5-$10 range seems reasonable to me. These coins are common enough in decent shape that beat up ones just do not have much value IMHO.

Quickly, on the date type. The small versus large 6 is pretty easy to tell apart. The medium 6 was from one obverse die and it has a distinct hole in the ear. So if you are debating between small and medium, or large and medium, check for a whole in the ear. Now, both the N15 and N21 are small date with hole in ear, but they are very scarce and rare respectively. Point being, if you think it's a medium date, check for a hole in the ear. If no hole it's not a medium date, if hole in the ear then look further.

I wish I could find $5.00 large cents with anywhere near this much meat left on the bone in my area. Most I get to see around are super slick.

Thanks for the good info on the date/what to look for.

I agree, cheapest I see are $8 and still in bad condition. His is beyond the quality of a $5 large cent. For $5 I got a dateless Classic Head large cent at a show, I needed it for my type set so I decided to buy it.

I'm just going by what I can find on ebay, here are a bunch of clean fine 1846 for around $15:

And an actual PCGS F15 for $21 (although how it got in with that gash is beyond me...):

IMHO, nice fine mature head late dates are pretty common, and nice ones can be found in the $15 range if you're patient. Given that, I think the value on the problem ones is closer to $5-$10. Now what you pay in a retail setting is a different story.

Sorry you went through the trouble of dragging up random auctions.

My post on your reply was just stating that I wish I could find common large cents in MY area that were not slick for $5.00. It simply dosnt happen in my location.

To call a yard sale/ tag sale "retail setting" is a little tough....

If you ever have any for 5.00 with this much meat let me know...I'll be your buyer for sure!

I agree with beef's value assessment in that condition.
